The Virgin of the Road Accompanies and Illuminates the Pilgrim or something like that. Road-side shrines are ubiquitous. The size varies from that of a shoe box to that of a small house. They get frequent visitors, as I often saw fresh flowers, even lit candles. Sometimes people would leave bottles of water as offerings. The saint of the road seemed an appropriate personnage for a touring cyclist to pay hommage to. The little signs and notes on the alter alternately thank and petition the saint.
